The Los Angeles Burrito

We got quite a reaction from listeners about my interview with Jonathan Gold about the L.A. burrito. One listener asked for a picture of a L.A. burrito. So we asked Good Food Music Supervisor and resident photographer to go out to El Tepeyac in East L.A. In Gary's words "This burrito is the biggest burrito I've ever eaten. It was the size of half my arm."

Ew. I'll still defend LA-style over SF-style burritos, but maybe the more important distinction is big vs. small? A burrito the size of a loaf of bread is disgusting, whether or not it has rice in it. (Note: I say that realizing that each individual BITE of said burrito may indeed be delicious.)

Did Gary say whether he enjoyed it or not?

We were originally planning to go to a total of 3 burrito places, but after our first stop at El Tepeyac the burrito expedition was over. I wouldn't say it's the best burrito in the world, and maybe because there's just so much of it there, you can't really take a small bite and enjoy it. The size of it is just overwhelming, but perhaps horrifying is a better word, especially if you try to split it between just two people. In the end we only managed to eat a quarter a piece, and brought the rest home. I'll tell you this much, at 3:30 am after a night of going out, that reheated ginourmous portion of left over burrito was my savior.
